Man, one would almost think that it’s a summer Saturday given the amount of nothing that I’ve done today. Just woke up from a killer nap, fearful that I should be doing something, then reminded myself to get a grip.
This past week, I went to a new exhibit at the Sackler Gallery which was mind-blowing, both in historical scope (Portugal’s colonial influence in the 14th-16th centuries) and sheer number of gilt objects. On Friday, I went to the Phillips Collection, a private museum up by Dupont Circle. Nice house, with a good collection of Bonnard, an artist with which I was not familiar, and hadn’t really even heard of before I started reading this nice gem of a book called The Accidental Masterpiece by the Times’ chief art critic, Michael Kimmelman.
Work is actually getting more interesting. I’d been working on several more contemporary works, including several recent enough that the artist was not only alive, but had an email address! Thus I’ve already had a few interesting online conversations about the stories behind a portrait. On Monday the whole of the Smithsonian staff (several thousand people) has a big picnic on the Mall in the middle of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. I’m praying for overcast. Because, though I’m absolutely wild about ethnic Mekong Delta Vietnamese cuisine, northern Irish crafts, and “Virginia Roots” folk music, I really just can’t handle it in the height of washington summer. Here’s hoping for the best.
Two Williamstown points: June isn’t even over yet, and its time to start getting the audition machine rolling – reserving rooms, getting song lists ready, printing posters and stuff. The managed chaos that is the start of the school year will be just a bit more wacky than usual. That said, I’m pretty certain I’m coming up to Williams on July 19th for the weekend for some quality time with friends, food, and the newly-installed Manton Collection.
